Solomon islands is a state of Oceania, east of Papua New Guinea, consisting of nearly one thousand islands. The Solomon Islands are believed to have been inhabited by Melanesian people for thousands of years. The United Kingdom established a protectorate over the Solomon Islands in 1893.

Mail was at first sent unstamped by bag to Sydney where stamps of New South Wales were applied and then cancelled.

The first stamps issued were a set of 7 with values from 1/2d - 1 shilling.
