The Imperial British East Africa Company was the first company allowed to operate international and domestic postal services, using the company name on the first stamps

They were also the first to create a series of surcharged stamps and in 1890 they set up Post Offices in Mombasa and Lamu and used British Postage stamps overstamped with 'BRITISH EAST AFRICA COMPANY'.
